Dr. Benson is a native of New Orleans, educated in the area’s Catholic schools, the University of New Orleans, and the LSU School of Medicine, from which he graduated in 1976. After an internship at Charity Hospital of Louisiana, he served his dermatology residency in the combined LSU-Tulane residency—one of the largest and most surgically-oriented residency programs in the US. After serving his third year as Chief Resident, he passed the American Board of Dermatology Certification Exam in 1980. Shortly after, he was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and a Full Fellow of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. In 1983 he was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.
After residency, Dr. Benson relocated to the northwestern shore of Lake Pontchartrain, where in 1980 he became the first dermatologist in Tangipahoa Parish, with offices next to North Oaks Hospital and in Amite. For thirteen years, he treated 30,000 residents of the area for general skin ailments, skin cancers, and cosmetic concerns. In the growing area of cosmetic surgery, Dr. Benson was among the first dermatologists in the US to perform such procedures as liposuction, fat transfers, collagen implants, breast augmentations, liposuction-assisted facelifts, and sclerotherapy.
In 1993, new frontiers beckoned. The Benson clan, consisting of Dr. Benson, his wife, their six boys, and baby daughter, moved to the skin cancer capital of the world—New Zealand. Over the next five years, Dr. Benson gained extensive experience in skin cancer surgery and introduced many New Zealand patients—sun-damaged far beyond their years—to the wonders of skin rejuvenation procedures, such as laser and peel resurfacing, laser eyelid surgery for droopy and baggy lids, neck suspension surgery for sagging neck skin, and facial and body liposuction. He also pioneered the use of rejuvenating face creams for collagen and elasticity restoration, which led to the development of his own line of products for the New Zealand market.
After five invaluable years in New Zealand, the pull of the Southern US became overwhelming. In 1998, the Benson family first returned to Hattiesburg, MS for two years, and then back home to Ponchatoula where they presently reside. Dr. Benson continues to enjoy the challenges of complicated skin care surgery, general dermatology, and the ever-expanding cosmetic surgery aspect of dermatology—now called “Dermasurgery.” Apart from a wealth of worldwide experience to offer in the treatment of skin ailments and growths, Dr. Benson’s repertoire of commonly-performed cosmetic surgery procedures include the following:
Smartlipo Laser Liposculpture for jowls, neck fullness, unwanted body fat deposits, and excessive underarm sweat glands
LipoLift Fat Transfer Breast Enhancement
NeoGraft Permanent Hair Restoration
Upper and lower eyelid surgery
Neck suspension procedures
Skin resurfacing via fractional and CO2 laser, chemical peel, and dermabr
